AVIANCA
A study of the Southern Cross will be incomplete if it does not include the oldest airline operating in the southern hemisphere and I call this airline AVIANCA (an acronym for Aerovias Nacionales de Colombia SA) known until 1940 with the thrilling name of SCADTA.
Thes company's southern cross services started as early as 1946 with DC4
as we all know, South American countries did not suffer from the devastating effect of of ww2 on their economies , on the contrary, they prospered by offering much needed raw material to the allies for their war effort,
The DC4 services to Europe were quickly upgraded to L749 constellation and then to the 1049 Super Constellation.
The timetable dated May 1, 1954 provides us with this following route operated once weekly : HAMBURG-FRANKFURT-MADRID-LISBON-SANTA MARIA (Azores)-BERMUDA-BARRANQUILLA-BOGOTA.
