JET BLUE 15TH ANNIVERSARY

JETBLUE

We celebrated on February 11, 2015, the 15th anniversary of the first flight to Fort Lauderdale of iconic JETBLUE. This post aims to reminisce the fans and likers of the blog of the first year of operations (until December 31, 2000) of JETBLUE.

According to documents filled with the SEC, the company was incorporated in the state of Delaware in August 1998 by David Neeleman (after his non-compete agreement with  SOUTHWEST expired) and a group of investors

JETBLUE was not the original name of the company , it was once known as NewAir (the name under which the first Airbuses were ordered) and even the name of TAXI was considered as a tribute to the famous New York cabs (the aircraft were also to be painted in yellow). This name was soon rejected for numerous reasons as the yellow cabs in New York do not have a pristine reputation, the word "taxi" can lead to problem in air traffic control coupled with the threat that one of the major venture capitalists to withdraw should this name be retained.

In September 1999, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey awarded the company 75 slots at JFK international airport.

As the major American airlines slowly drifted to "no frills, no thrills" type of companies, JETBLUE wanted to differentiate from the start by bringing according to its founder David Neeleman  "Humanity in air travel". The company provided low fare together with amenities comparable to the ones enjoyed by travellers in the sixties. In the new century , these were translated into leather seats, TV and satellite radio. With this product differentiation , the company aimed at attracting and/or creating a strong and loyal customer base .

Against all odds, the company ordered the Airbus A320 fitted with 150 seats because the A320 was the only aircraft capable of flying transcon (should weather and wind permitted). and the urban legend says that David Neeleman got an extremely good deal from Airbus.

The first airbus was delivered in December 1, 1999

STATISTICS

It is worth noting that JetBlue could position itself as a dominant carrier on the route to Oakland and enjoyed a monopoly on New York-Ontario sector

4-RANKINGS

From the beginning JetBlue was capable to distinguish itself with high load factors, alas the year ended with a loss as the break-even point was much higher than the actual Load factor.
