EMIRATES AIRLINES 20 YEARS AGO

EMIRATES AIRLINES 20 YEARS AGO

2O years ago Emirates Airlines was not the behemoth airline we know today, it was one of the fastest growing airlines in the world and has managed to turn Dubai , an airport used by European and Asian Airlines as a stop between Europe and Asia and Europe and Australia, into  one of the largest transfer hubs in the world.
In the beginning, there was a political will by the ruling family of Dubai to create an airline independent from government subsidies and to fill the void left by Gulf Air as this later was reducing its services from the emirate.
The company was initially founded with a capital of USD 10,000,000 from the royal family and PIA  jumped to help the fledging airline by leasing a Boeing 737-300 and an Airbus s A300-b4 and by helping the management of the new born airline .The Royal Dubai Air wing provided with 2 Boeing 727-200.

During the period studied, the company operated to 37 destinations and has a total network length of 117,061 km of unduplicated route with a fleet of 8 Airbus A310 and 8 Airbus A300 (more on the fleet further down in this post)

LEGEND

YELLOW Operated by Airbus A310-300.
ORANGE Operated by Airbus A300-600R
GREEN  Equipment varies

NTR  No Traffic Rights
TR Traffic Rights

More analytically,  Its Winter schedule dated 1995/96 shows the following Regional network

with 9 destinations served on 49 weekly schedules

Abu Dhabi -Dubai did not have any traffic rights

Its Middle Eastern Destination numbered 7 and were  linked to Dubai with 15 weekly flights

Worth noting here are both  the number of dog-legged sectors between Amman/Damascus/Dubai-Beirut/Larnaca/Dubai and the Non-traffic rights segments .
All flights are operated exclusively by the Airbus A310

Its European and African Network shows the following routes and segments

Both London airports are served from Dubai and Abu Dhabi with 21weekly flights.
Emirate is one of the few airlines serving Moroni Airport in the Comoros islands

Its India and Far East Network shows the following routes and segments

NB NTR  CMB-SIN should be read CMB-CGK

With 42 weekly schedules it is a heavily flown sector particularly between India/Bangladesh to accommodate the flow of workers.

A lot of traffic rights between segments  but also an unusual number of multi stop segments
