G-AWYU BCAL BAC 111-500 ( a model a history)

G-AWYU is a BAC 111-501Ex with CN 177.
It first flew on June 10, 1969 and was delivered to British United Airways one week later.

Aftert the merger with Caledonian Airways in 1970, the aircraft was christened "Isle of Colonsay"

and upon the merger with British Airways , it was renamed "County of Avon"

The aircraft was leased to Ryanair from June 10,1993 to March 1994 as EI-CIC

and then sold to various African Operators :Express City/ Zaire Express (Dec 95), Zaire Airlines (Jan 1997) and finally to Congo Airlines (21/5/1997).
The aircraft met its final fate when it was scrapped in 2005.
A few words about the BAC 111-500, compared to its siblings the stretched version of the original BAC111-200/400 series was longer by 4.11 m, the latest version of the MK 512 spey engine, an increased wing span 1.5 m and a longer range of 2744 km. Furthermore, the capacity increased from 79 passengers to 119 passengers.
The bac 111 was a direct competitor to the F28 and Doiglas DC9.
