BOEING 787 OPERATIONS 2012-2017 WITH US AIRLINE COMPANIES


Introduction

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is an American long-haul, mid-size widebody, twin-engine jet airliner. Its variants seat 242 to 335 passengers in typical three-class seating configurations. It is the first airliner with an airframe constructed primarily of composite materials. and most importantly , it t shares a common type rating with the larger Boeing 777 to allow qualified pilots to operate both models. The airliner's maiden flight took place on December 15, 2009 after 19 months after its planned first flight (May 2008) the first 787-8 was delivered in September 2011. It entered commercial service on October 26, 2011 with launch customer All Nippon Airways From Tokyo Narita to Hong Kong The stretched 787-9 variant, which is 20 feet (6.1 m) longer and can fly 450 nautical miles (830 km) farther than the -8, first flew in September 2013. Deliveries of the 787-9 began in July 2014; it entered commercial service on August 7, 2014 with All Nippon Airways.



The first operator of the Dreamliner in the United States was United Airlines which ordered 12 B787-800, and 38 Boeing 787-900 (+14 B787-10)

United took delivery of its first B787-800 on September 23,2012 (N20904) fitted woth C36/183Y seats

originally ordered by Continental Airlines and Started services in November of that year with first flights from Houston to Chicago and San Francisco . The tables below give an outlook of the B787 operations with United Airlines for 2012






The airline carried 69278 passengers  mostly on domestic sectors. Load factor averaged  83% and the most travelled routes were from the company' s hub Houston- San Francisco and Houston-Chicago


By the end of 2012 , Boeing had delivered N27901 (27-12-2012),N26902 (26-11-2012),N27903 (20-12-2012),N20904 (23-09-2012),N45905 (14-12-2012) N26906 (11-1-2012) ,   to United Airlines


2013


On January 16, 2013, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued an emergency airworthiness directive ordering all U.S.-based airlines to ground their Boeing 787s until yet-to-be-determined modifications were made to the electrical system to reduce the risk of the battery overheating or catching fire. This was the first time that the FAA had grounded an airliner type since 1979
The Federal Aviation Administration lifted  on April 19, 2013 the ban  and allowed  U.S. Dreamliners to return to service after changes were made to their battery systems to better contain battery fires.



The company flew 481964 passengers on its B787 with a load  factor of 85% and mostly on its international network for which the plane was originally designed





Its most popular domestic sectors were between the company's hubs of Denver, Houston and Los Angeles and its most popular international destinations were Tokyo-Narita with 28% of the total passengers flown


By the end of 2013,Boeing had delivered N29907 (01-08-2013),N27908 (13-11-2013) to United Airlines



2014

This year sees the first delivery of the stretched version to United  Airlines N38950 delivered on 16-09-2014 fitted with C48/204Y seats

United Airlines carries  1051243 passengers on their B787 with an average load factor of 84.7%





The most popular destinations are Tokyo Narita and Shanghai which account for more than 26.7% of total passengers carried  and Japan sees most 787 flights with 36% of the passengers carried.

United Airlines introduces the 787-9 with great success on its flagship route from Los Angeles to Melbourne with a staggering  load factor of 87.2%




By the end of 2014, Boeing had delivered  N28912 (26-06-2014),N26909 (27-01-2014) N26910 (22-03-2014)  N30913 (17-12-2014) B787-8, and N38950 (16-09-2014),N19951 (01-11-2014) B787-9 to United Airlines

2015

American Airlines receives its first B787-8 on 23/01/2015 (N800AN)

and introduces the jet on its domestic route Dallas to Chicago and other miscellaneous  proving routes. American Airlines' B787-8 are fitted with C28/198Y seats

Both carriers carry 2238843 passengers on 11861 flights . United Airlines' market share is  80%





United Airlines best international routes are  Houston London and Los Angeles-Shanghai and  its most travelled domestic route is between the airline 2 hubs  Denver -Houston

American Airlines best international route is  Dallas-Shanghai and  its most travelled domestic route is between the airline 2 hubs  Dallas and Chicago 

The 4 biggest international markets are Japan with 21.8% of passenger carried, China with 17% followed by the United Kingdom and Brazil with 9.6% and 7.8 % respectively

American Airlines receives its fits Boeing 787-9 N820AL on September 13,2016. American Airlines' B787-9 are fitted with C30/W21/Y234 seats

Both companies carry 3.917.090 passengers on 20371  flights 




 
13.6% are carried on domestic flights and the remaining on international flights.


Still, the B787-8 carries the bulk of passengers  

 





 United Airlines top 3 international routes are Los-Angeles-Melbourne, Los-Angeles-Tokyo (NRT) and Los-Angeles-Shanghai   and   its most travelled domestic routes are between the airline's 2 hubs  Denver-Houston and Houston- San Francisco

2017




 




Traffic on United and  American Airlines increased  by 37%. from 3.917.090 to 5.368.736 ( including non-scheduled flights) with however a decline in Load factors from 82.2% to 79.9%

Passengers carried are evenly distributed between the 787-8 and 787-9 version  but more passengers are carried by AA' b787-8  and UA's b787-9 according to the table below





The share of domestic passengers carried on both  airlines fell dramatically representing only 6.35% of total passenger carried






United Airlines top 3 international routes are Los-Angeles-Shanghai, Los Angeles-Tokyo (NRT) and Los-Angeles-Sydney

American Airlines best 3 international route are Chicago-London ,Dallas-Seoul and Dallas-Madrid

  


The 5 biggest international markets are China with  19.7% market share,   , Japan  13.2%,  United Kingdom 12.1% followed by Australia and France  with 8.7% and 8.4% market share respectively
